A toad is a frog. Not loosely or colloquially but taxonomically: every toad sits inside the order Anura alongside every other frog, and there is no separate branch labeled Toad. What people usually mean by the word is a member of the family Bufonidae, the true toads, and those you can pick out by dry bumpy skin, short walking legs, a pair of glands behind the eyes, and a complete absence of teeth.
What is the difference between a frog and a toad?
The reliable field marks, in roughly the order you will notice them:
- Skin. Frogs tend to be moist and smooth. Toads are dry and covered in raised bumps.
- Legs. Frogs have long hind legs built for launching. Toads have short ones and often walk or make low hops rather than leaping.
- Build. Frogs are usually slimmer and higher off the ground. Toads are squat and sit heavily.
- Glands. A true toad carries a pair of parotoid glands behind the eyes, visible as a raised oval on each side of the head. Frogs do not have them.
- Teeth. Most frogs have small teeth along the upper jaw. True toads have none at all.
- Eggs. Frogs lay clumps, rafts, or globular clusters. Toads lay long strings.
- Water. Frogs generally stay close to it. Toads range further into dry ground and return to water mainly to breed.
Treat all of these as tendencies rather than rules. The word toad has been applied to animals in several unrelated frog families that happen to look the part, so any individual animal can break one of these marks without being misfiled.
Is a toad a frog?
Yes, and this is the part most comparisons skip. There are more than 7,000 frog species, spread across dozens of families, and all of them belong to the order Anura. Within that order, the family Bufonidae holds the true toads, more than 500 species of them. There is no rank called Toad sitting opposite Frog.
So the question is shaped a little like asking whether an animal is a dog or a terrier. Terrier is a real, useful category, and it is also a kind of dog. Toad works the same way: a real, useful description of a body plan and a way of living, nested inside the larger group.
This is also why the word gets applied so widely. Squat, dry-skinned, ground-dwelling frogs have evolved repeatedly in lineages that are not closely related, and people have called nearly all of them toads. Spadefoot toads, for instance, are not true toads at all.
Do frogs have teeth?
Most do, which surprises people who have handled one. The teeth are small, sit along the upper jaw, and are often accompanied by a second set on the palate. Almost no frog has teeth on the lower jaw. They are not for chewing: a frog swallows prey whole and uses its teeth to hold something in place while that happens.
True toads have none. Not reduced teeth, not a few: a 2021 study in eLife examining frog dentition across the group found that all 48 bufonid genera it looked at lack teeth entirely, and that teeth have never been regained in the family. The same work found something stranger about frogs generally, which is that teeth have been lost at least 22 separate times across their evolution, more often than in any other vertebrate group.
A second 2021 paper dated the toad version of that loss by examining amelogenin, the gene behind tooth enamel. In true toads it is broken, a pseudogene, and the estimated window for its inactivation is 46 to 60 million years ago. A toad's toothlessness is not a quirk. It is older than most mammal families.
Do toads give you warts?
No. Warts are caused by human papillomavirus, of which there are more than 200 types, and you acquire one when the virus enters through a break in your skin. The break does not have to be visible. No amphibian is involved at any point in that process, and the American Academy of Dermatology states plainly that kissing a frog or a toad will not give you a wart.
The bumps on a toad are glands. They are not warts, not an infection, and not transmissible to anything. Two things collided to build the myth: toad skin genuinely resembles warty human skin, and toads secrete a substance that can irritate on contact. Handle a toad, notice a blemish a few weeks later, and the story writes itself. It is a good example of a folk explanation that got the correlation and missed the cause entirely.
Are toads poisonous?
Yes, in the defensive sense, and this is the grain of truth the warts myth grew around. Those parotoid glands behind the eyes secrete bufotoxins, a group of compounds that act on the heart and nervous system. The purpose is to make the toad unpleasant to swallow, not to attack anything. Poisonous is the right word rather than venomous, because a toad has no way to inject anything; the chemistry only matters if it gets into a mouth or an eye.
For a person, the practical risk is irritation after touching a toad and then rubbing your eyes. For dogs it is more serious. A dog that mouths a large toad, particularly a cane toad in Florida, Hawaii, or south Texas, can be poisoned badly and quickly. Rinse the animal's mouth sideways with running water so it does not swallow, and call a veterinarian without waiting to see how it develops.
How can you tell frog eggs from toad eggs?
This is the most dependable field mark of all, because it asks nothing of your judgment about skin texture.
Toads lay their eggs in long strings, two dark rows in a clear gelatinous tube, usually wound around submerged stems. American toad strings have been recorded running more than 60 feet. Frogs lay masses instead: globular clusters attached to vegetation, or thin rafts floating at the surface, depending on the species.
Strings mean toad. Clumps and rafts mean frog. If you are looking at a pond in spring and cannot decide what has been breeding in it, the eggs will tell you more reliably than a glimpse of the adult.
Can you touch a toad?
You can, and generations of children have done so without consequence. Wet your hands first, keep it brief, keep it low to the ground, and wash afterward before touching your face. That covers the entire risk to you.
The more interesting caution runs the other way, toward the animal. Amphibian skin is permeable and does a share of the breathing, so sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitiser, and soap residue on your palms are genuinely bad for a toad. Wet bare hands are kinder than dry ones or gloves treated with anything.
One rule matters more than handling technique: do not move amphibians between ponds. Chytrid fungus and ranavirus travel on skin, water, and boots, and a well-meaning relocation is one of the ways they reach a new population. Put the animal back where you found it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a toad just an older frog?
No. They are different families within the same order, and neither turns into the other. A toad hatches as a tadpole and grows into a toad.
Do toads jump or walk?
Mostly walk, with short hops when pressed. The long-legged launch people picture when they think of amphibians belongs to frogs.
Is every bumpy amphibian a toad?
Not necessarily. Several unrelated frog families have evolved dry, warty, ground-living forms, and spadefoot toads are the usual example of an animal called a toad that is not a true one.
Can frogs and toads breed together?
Not across that distance. They are separated by tens of millions of years of evolution, which is far more than enough to rule it out.
